Vacuum Pump Selection: What to Include in Your Inquiry

For a vacuum pump inquiry, provide the process purpose, gas composition, target pressure, required flow with units and measurement conditions, running pattern, possible liquids or dust, installation constraints, and electrical supply. If you are replacing a pump, add its nameplate and a dimensioned installation drawing. Mark unknown information clearly instead of estimating a specification from a model name.

These details give the inquiry a defined operating requirement. A category name or headline rating alone does not establish whether a particular configuration fits your process.

1. Explain what the vacuum must achieve

Describe the task: evacuating a vessel within a cycle, maintaining a process pressure, supplying several suction stations, or replacing an existing unit. For a cyclic process, include vessel volume, starting pressure, target pressure and available evacuation time. For a steady process, describe the incoming gas load and any known air leakage.

If several stations share the vacuum source, list their individual requirements and which operate together. Include normal and peak demand rather than only a single maximum figure. This makes it possible to request performance data for the operating conditions you actually need.

2. Identify the gas and how it changes

List the substances entering the pump, their expected quantities or ranges, and the inlet temperature range where known. Identify moisture, vapours and entrained material rather than describing everything as air. Explain changes during normal operation, startup, shutdown, cleaning and different production batches.

A broad label such as solvent service is not a complete compatibility specification. If composition is uncertain, state what is missing and ask which information is needed for a model-specific review. Do not assume chemical compatibility or a protective configuration from catalogue wording.

3. State pressure and flow on a clear basis

Give the target pressure with its unit and state whether it is absolute or gauge pressure. For an explanation of these references and units, see absolute and gauge vacuum pressure. Identify where the pressure requirement applies in the installation. Provide the required flow alongside that pressure, with units such as m³/h or L/min and the measurement conditions or reference basis used in your specification.

Keep the original units when sharing an existing specification. If the flow basis is unknown, label it as unknown. Ask for the proposed performance curve and test conditions so that figures can be compared on the same basis.

Do not treat a model number as a flow rating or a published end pressure as proof of evacuation time. For a timed evacuation, provide the volume, pressure range, gas load and pipework details as well.

4. Describe continuous or intermittent operation

State whether demand is continuous or intermittent. Record running and idle periods, expected starts, and changes in demand through the cycle. Include ambient conditions and available ventilation, especially when the pump will sit inside an enclosure.

This information allows the proposed duty rating and controls to be checked against the running pattern. Request model-specific duty limits; do not infer continuous-duty suitability from a product name.

5. Include liquids, dust and existing separation equipment

Describe expected condensate, liquid carryover, particles or dust, including quantities or ranges where known. Identify filters, separators and pipework already installed. These are part of the installation being assessed, not details to leave until after choosing a model.

For a liquid-ring inquiry, also provide the working-liquid type, expected inlet temperature, available supply, and intended disposal or recirculation arrangement. State site limits on consumption and discharge. Request a defined circuit and component list rather than assuming separation or recirculation equipment is included.

6. Show where the pump must fit and how it will be powered

Provide the available space, mounting arrangement, inlet and exhaust connections, service access and ventilation route. For an enclosed or replacement installation, include photographs and a dimensioned drawing showing the connection routes.

State supply voltage, phase and frequency, the intended control method, and any starting limitations. Ask for the specific motor option, connection specification and installation drawing. An existing model label alone is not enough to establish a direct replacement.

Use category pages to organise questions, not to assume suitability

The following categories can help you identify what documentation to request. They do not replace a review of your operating conditions.

  • Rotary vane vacuum pumps: describe the evacuation cycle and request the curve, lubrication instructions, exhaust arrangements and dimensions for the proposed configuration.
  • Piston vacuum pumps: include equipment duty cycle, enclosure conditions, mounting details and electrical requirements.
  • Claw vacuum pumps: describe simultaneous suction stations and changing demand, and request documented operating limits and control options.
  • Screw vacuum pumps: describe the complete process stream and request materials, temperature limits and any required cooling, purge or cleaning arrangements.
  • Roots vacuum boosters: identify the backing equipment, piping and operating sequence. Request data for the complete arrangement and its protective controls.
  • 2BVA liquid ring vacuum pumps: provide both gas conditions and the working-liquid circuit requirements.
  • ZBW oil-free dry vacuum pumps: provide installation interfaces, supply details and duty cycle; define the cleanliness requirement rather than relying on the oil-free label alone.

Common inquiry questions

Is the existing pump model enough for a replacement inquiry?

No. Add the nameplate, connections, electrical supply, installation dimensions and operating conditions so that the replacement can be checked.

What if some operating information is missing?

Identify the missing information explicitly. Share the available process description and measurements, and ask what additional data is needed before selecting a configuration.

Does an oil-free or dry label establish suitability for my process?

No. State your cleanliness, gas compatibility and duty requirements and request documentation for the exact configuration. A category label does not establish approval for a particular application or eliminate maintenance requirements.

Which documents should I request with a proposed pump?

Request the performance curve and test conditions, operating limits, installation drawing, motor option and maintenance instructions. For a system or liquid circuit, also request the configuration, component scope and operating sequence.
